Expanding Reality for Enhancing
Well-Being and Learning

We regularly expand our everyday reality using digital technologies — and most of us do so without even noticing. Using artificial intelligence (AI), this digital expansion of reality may look like this: we communicate with AI in much the same way as we do with another person. By taking on different roles, AI can therefore help us practise and learn to communicate — for example in difficult social situations or in other languages — all within our everyday reality and without any specialised hardware. Yet digital technologies can expand reality far beyond this: immersive technologies such as virtual reality (VR) place us in entirely new environments, changing the way we perceive our body, interact with others, and engage with the world around us. Such expansions of reality — whether through AI or through VR and mixed reality — have the potential to enhance both human well-being and the learning of key competencies. My current research and teaching activities therefore focus on the following question: how can we expand reality using digital technologies — AI, VR, and mixed reality — in ways that strengthen key competencies, social participation, and human well-being?
